Felt Hat Making: Easy Stiffening

This is how I use our felt stiffener

This is really easy as long as you remember:

a ………………..frame of mind........Imagine you are stroking a baby kitten!

b……………….do this in a well ventilated room away from sources of ignition

c ……………….you will need felt stiffener, a paint brush and a newspaper

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Make sure your hat is totally dry. NO WATER!

1. Spread a newspaper
2. Take a clean paint brush and open the can of Felt Stiffener
3. Turn hat upside down so that the inside is facing you
4. Dip the brush LIGHTLY into the stiffener
5. Apply felt stiffener in little circles starting in the middle of the crown

  

 

 

 

 

 

       7.Work outwards until the crown is evenly coated. Leave the edge that will be turned in unstiffened

 

 

 

 

 

 

       

      8. Do not be tempted to apply extra coats. It will stiffen significantly as it dries.You are not aiming at making a crash helmet!

        9.Allow to dry naturally either back on the block or you can gently place it on a towel on top of a radiator

        10. When your hat is completely dry, check for weak points. Apply a little stiffener to these areas.....very lightly!

         

        Your hat is stiffened ......................well done!
